How To Put Dinner on the Table with a Budget
by Chef Nick Cavataio
We all know it's more expensive to eat
healthy foods than junk foods. The economy
is forcing a lot of folks to look at the number
one expenditure in there budget, FOOD. A limited
budget will contribute to poor eating habits. I
know it's easier to get dinner on the table with
prepared (junk) foods than making your meal from
scratch. But is it really worth it? Like the
old saying goes "pay now or pay later"
Your budget crunch doesn't have to stop you
from eating healthier. We just need to be more
creative with our solutions.
Tips for a Healthier lifestyle on a Budget
1 - Never go to the grocery store hungry.
2 - Farmer's Markets
Get fresh grown produce from your local farmers.
With a little planning you can prepare healthier
meals for your family. Your local Chamber of
Commerce can help you locate the Farmer's
Markets in your area.
3 - Grocery Store Newspaper Circulars
Take the time to scan the various sales at the
local grocery stores. We all like getting a
great deal and saving money is making money.
4 - Do more of your own prep work
Our society wants convenience. Don't be tempted
it's better to cut your own veggies. All those
prepackaged veggies and fruits aren't as good
for you anyway. Take them home to clean and cut
fresh. You'll get more of the nutrients you're
looking for when you're willing to do more
preparation.
5 - Make it from Scratch More Often
Homemade is always healthier than store bought.
Most prepared foods usually have more salt, fat
and who knows what all those big words are on
the labels. Learn how to cook your own meals.
Once you conquer a couple of basic soup recipes,
you'll have a foundation to build on that will
feed your family week after week for less.
The idea here is spend more time and less money.
The facts show spending more time in the kitchen,
as a family will do more than just save money and
contribute to a healthier lifestyle. It will
contribute to better relationships as well. A
family that eats together stays together.
